WETIA Director Speaks at ETS and CETS on AI and Theology

February 24, 2026

WETIA Executive Director Dr. Walker Tzeng spoke at Evangelical Theological Society’s (ETS) 2025 Annual Conference in Boston and 2026 Chinese Evangelical Theological Society’s (CETS) 2026 Annual Conference at the Graduate Theological Union near UC Berkeley. The conferences, which happened in November 2025 and January 2026, featured Dr. Tzeng as a speaker on the topic of AI and Theology. His paper that was presented was entitled “Can AI ‘Know’ God? A Comparative Study of Generati ve AI and Human Theology.”

Dr. Tzeng’s paper examines how large-language-model artificial intelligence systems generate theological content and compares this process with the methods and epistemological grounding of human theologians. The paper evaluates the capabilities and limitations of AI in relation to theological reasoning, drawing on both technical analysis and classical biblical understandings of the knowledge of God. Throughout his presentation, Dr. Tzeng emphasized the importance of understanding the technical algorithmic function of AI before judging whether or not it was generating knowledge as a human would.

At the CETS conference, Dr. Qingjun Luo, and prominent researcher in computer science, who holds a Ph.D. in the field responded the paper by affirming the direction and providing critical feedback on areas of further technical exploration. Other attendees gave feedback for discussion including Dr. Gideon Lee, who serves as Dr. Tzeng research advisor, and a prominent Chinese theologian and author Dr. Enoch Wan.
