The World Evangelical Theological Institute Association (WETIA) has developed a comprehensive seminar titled, “AI in Research and Writing.” The three-hour seminar was developed by Executive Director Dr. Walker Tzeng and first presented at Western Seminary’s doctoral colloquium. It equips theological students and scholars with an understanding of AI technology and its practical applications in academic research and writing.
The seminar covers three major areas: AI’s technical strengths, ethical weaknesses, and future potential. Topics include using AI for research assistance, literature analysis, writing, and theological inquiry, while addressing challenges such as inaccurate citations, algorithmic bias, academic integrity, and overreliance on AI-generated content. Particular emphasis is placed on responsible AI usage that strengthens rather than replaces critical thinking, original scholarship, and spiritual discernment.
Through this initiative, WETIA seeks to help theological institutions effectively integrate emerging AI technologies while maintaining academic rigor, ethical responsibility, and the spiritual foundations of theological education.
