Can AI "Know" God?
November 15, 2025
Dr. Walker Tzeng will present his research paper, “Can AI ‘Know’ God? A Comparative Study of Generative AI and Human Theology,” at the Evangelical Theological Society (ETS) Annual Conference in Boston, Massachusetts, on November 18, 2025.
The paper examines how large-language-model artificial intelligence systems generate theological content and compares this process with the methods and epistemological grounding of human theologians. Dr. Tzeng evaluates the capabilities and limitations of AI in relation to theological reasoning, drawing on both technical analysis and classical biblical understandings of the knowledge of God.
As AI continues to influence education, ministry, and global communication, the study raises important questions about how emerging technologies interact with core theological commitments. Dr. Tzeng’s presentation will contribute to the ongoing academic discussion on theological method, human distinctiveness, and the implications of AI for future scholarship.
Those attending ETS 2025 will have the opportunity to hear the full presentation and engage the topic further.
